Autumn

THEMES:

Seasons; (Specifically) Autumn/Winter; Colour (leaves)

THE SONG:

The changing patterns of the weather become very apparent fairly early in the school year with the end of summer and the onset of autumn. A colourful time of year in parks and gardens as deciduous trees put on their fiery show. This special time of year lends itself to quiet walks in the parks and collecting as many different coloured leaves – piling them up and running, jumping and kicking them – the final fling before the entrapment of Winter

ACTIVITIES:  (As above, plus…)

Art/Craft: Collecting leaves and making collage pictures, printing with the variety of leaf shapes in paint and ink, using the stems and twigs for the outline, using the colours of the leaves to fill in the picture are age old favorites.

Maths:

Classification, using the collections of leaves (shape attributes – same and different; rough and smooth; round and pointy, etc.)

One to One counting – who has the most leaves.

Language:

  1. Poetry – using descriptive words of autumn leaves; design and write short poems – those with similar matter can be joined to form a large poem from the class on topic. (In fact! the 2nd, 4th, 5th & 7th lines of the chorus are directly from such an  exercise)
  2. Use “AUTUMN” as the beginning  letters

A nother day comes along,

U nder cloudy skys.

Together we can walk the park

U mbrella ready to be used

M urmur of creeks to rivers flow

N o longer summer evenings glow.

Game: Who can pick up the most leaves in 1 minute? After a few practices – who can pick up the most yellow leaves, the green and yellow leaves, the most red leaves, etc. This could follow on from the Maths (A) activity.

Song Lyrics:

Autumn

Chorus

It’s Autumn, It’s Autumn,

The wind is getting colder.

It’s Autumn, It’s Autumn,

The clouds they roll all over,

And the leaves that are green turn to brown

And they wither with the wind

And they crumble in your hand

It’s Autumn (echo) It’s Autumn (echo).

Verse 1

In Autumn, the leaves on the trees

Turn colours of red, yellow and brown

Looking so pretty,…

And making the parks blaze like fire!

The wind it blows, the rain falls down

And you know what season it is all around.

Chorus

Verse 2

In Autumn, the sun up so high

Shines coldly in the frosty morning’s sky.

Making the ground glisten and shimmer

With the dew upon the grass,…

The cold chills your body … The fog covers the ground.

And you know what season it is all around.

Chorus
