THEMES:
Seasons, specifically “Spring”; Colour; Nature.
THE SONG:
Continuing on the theme of seasons, one of the most spectacular and colourful would have to be Spring. The sudden appearance of blossoms from buds and many of the dormant plants bursting with new life, not to mention the re-generation within the animal kingdom makes Spring, Mother Nature’s show piece. A great time for parents to get with their children and get out and experience it first hand
ACTIVITIES:
Decorate your rooms with fresh blooms every day. Make it a challenge to get something different every day.
Science: Nature tables should get a great variety of items over this period. Plants and flowers would be useful in a classification exercise. A garden clean up, weeding and planting would all be worthwhile activities around home and school.
The Spectrum could be explored if “Colour” is the theme.
Social Studies:
Have a “Spring Clean” of the house (or classroom). From this clean up may come bags of old clothes, shoes, etc., that could be used by the volunteer organisations. (eg. St.Vincent De Paul Society, Brotherhood of St. Lawrence, Salvation Army, etc) This may also begin a study of community, community groups or our role as future community builders.
Maths:
Measurement; Take daily, weekly and monthly measurements of plants, flowers and grass height. Graphs could be generated and reasons for accelerated growth could be explored!
Do we go through a growth period too?.I.I. ,
Height, weight and general exploration of body parts in terms of measurement could be opened up
Language: Common & Botanical names for plants could be explored. Various hues and shades of colour could be used as a word study as well as an Art/Craft lesson.
Drama: “Spring, Spring has Sprung!” Have the children springing around room in chorus
Song Lyrics:
Spring Has Sprung:
Chorus
Spring, Spring, Spring, Spring,
Spring, Spring has sprung!!
Sing a Song of Spring,
See the flowers bring, Colour to the world around you
Spring, Spring, Spring, Spring,
Spring, Spring has sprung!!
New growth all around, See it in the ground,
Fruit on trees and vegetables rising,….
Verse 1
And even in the depth of Winter
When it seems so cold and bleak
Jack Frost’s nipping at your toe nails
We wear woolen socks to warm our feet.
Trees are covered with the blossoms
They respond to the sun’s light!
The temperature is rising
And the stars shine in the crystal clear night.
Chorus
Verse 2
Nature wakes up from her sleep
She sheds her winter’s gown
New life springs from vegetation
And flowers perfume is smelt all around
The birds building their nests
They don’t take time out to rest
They know that it’s nearly time
For Mother Nature to display her very best!
Chorus
