Pool Rule Song

THEMES:
Water; Swimming Program; Safety and specifically –  Safety around pools!
THE SONG:

This was a simple song designed as a sing-a-long song to be sung on the way to the pool for swimming lessons. The tune is well known – “Click Go the Shears” – and this was used so that the song could be learnt quickly. It generally takes three bus trips for children to master the song – four trips for the bus driver!!

ACTIVITIES:

Swimming Program: Used as an introduction to children to understand the rules pertaining to the safe operation of the pool. Use it a week before program begins so that it can be used on the trip to the pool as a constant reinforcement.

Social Studies: Draw the signs at the pool which signify the rules mentioned in the song. If there are none to be seen, design your own and present them to the pool attendant. They may even use them! This could lead on to safety signs in traffic on the way to the pool by bus, or walking. Colour and design would be looked at (Red for danger; used for ‘give way’; used for ‘stop’, etc.)

Maths: Displacement of water by body. Experiments and measuring of same. Archimedes story could be useful – Did he really think of that or was it a hot bath

– “Eureka”!!

[Mr. Archimedes Bath by Pamela Allen is an excellent story book for Math’s work[

Actions:
Hand actions for the song are available below – designed to be able to perform while sitting bouncing in a bus to the pool.

Song Lyrics

(sung to the tune of “Click goes the shears”)

Pool Rule Song

Verse 1

Down by the Pool,

The Pool Attendant stands,

Pointing to the Pool rules, With his thin wet hand,

The pool rules are for a reason,

The reason you see, Safety in the water is the only way to be, …

Chorus

Learn all your pool rules;

1,2,31

No running, no fighting, no pushing for me.

When you’re by the swimming pool

Safety is the key,

So learn all your safety rules and sing along with me.

Verse 2

It’s slippery by the edge so we do not run,

We look before we leap into the water for some fun.

Dunking and pushing your friends isn’t good,

And we never dive into the shallow end or we’ll end up fishy food,  …

Chorus
