Classroom activities
THEMES:
Transport, Communication.
THE SONG:
This is a fun song, at the driver’s expense, written for the math’s concept of counting by tens.
The meaning of “Big Rig”,“miles” and “bog” may have to be explained.
To get children involved quickly, let them yell out “Oh yeah!” at the end of each line, as if yelling over the engine of the “big rig”!!
ACTIVITIES:
Maths: Counting by tens. Introduce tens and counting orally up to· 50 by them. Get them to draw on the back of an outlined truck 10, 20, 30 etc., containers or sheep or – anything!
Social Studies: Survey: Make a roster and monitor the loads of Utes, trucks and semis as they travel past a set point on the main road nearest school.
This could go into a Math’s session on Graphical Representation, or just draw conclusions from the cargo as to the main industries or produce in the area.
Art/Craft: Make trucks out of match boxes, sticks and card.
Language: “Breaker, Breaker”. Look at the “C.B.” jargon and how these are used in the rigs. Invite a ‘truckie’ to talk to children about their life, their experiences on the road and possibly show their ‘rig’!! All very stimulating for oral and written language.
Song Lyrics:
Truckin’
Chorus
Rolling down the road with the wind on my tail
Pressing my foot to the floor this big rigs rolling, heading for home.
I’m getting tired I no longer want to roam!
Verse 1
Picked up ten tons of coal, Oh Yeah!
Drove it about a hundred miles or so, Oh Yeah!
But when I got to the other end, oh Yeah!
They told me I had to take it back again,
Oh No!
Chorus
Verse 2
Picked up twenty bales of hay, Oh Yeah!
Stopped for a little drink on the way, Oh Yeah!
But when I got outside to drive again, Oh Yeah!
A horse had gone and eaten everything,
Oh No!! .
Chorus
Verse 3
Picked up thirty big tree logs, Oh Yeah!
But somehow I managed to get bogged, Oh Yeah!
The boss-man came by the bog to see it, Oh Yeah!
Then he went and threw me right in it,
Oh No!!
